Oooops! I think I asked you a question in the wrong section. But anyway, I was wondering how eyeshadows should be applied. Do you typically go lighter colors to darker? For a soft smokey look, what are your favorite eyeshadow colors if you don’t want a really dramatic look. Thanks for this great blog. J’ai entendu dire que quand tu as un teint très clair mais avec des cernes tu peux juste appliquer un anti-cernes et l’utiliser un peu pour camoufler toutes les imperfections de ton visage, ce qui t’exemptes de fond de teint et de poudre ce que j’ai essayé de faire mais j’ai l’impression que cela ne donne pas assez de finition et ce n’est en aucun cas uniforme. Comment faire alors pour trouver un moyen de camoufler toutes ces cernes qui assombrissent le visage sans effet masque, c’est à dire un maquillage soft idéal pour tous les jours par exemple…

Hi Tiff,
It’s true that the studio fix can make the skin look dry, espcially if you already have a combination/dry skin. I suggest you use the studio stick foundation. It is half way between a liquid and a powder and it is easy to use. Make sure you moisturizer your skin before using any type of powder/foundation. Read the post on foundation and powder also.

Blushes!!! I love blushes!!! Will write a post on that this weekend!!!
But I will tell you straight up not to try too hard on them since you and I have about the same complexion. Do not try to match your blush to your lip color as not all colors will look good on your cheeks. If you want pinkish cheeks, try the blush Raizin or Loverush (just a lil bit for this one as it can come out too pink). Mocha will also look good on you but it will be more like an earth tone natural blush. Another blush that I like using almost with anything is FORMAT, it looks brown but when you apply it, it gives you a very soft and natural almost brown-pink look. Get this one for sure!

Von Lee is the best makeup school in the area, it’s in VA. I heard that Bennett academy in Dc is also pretty good (but Von Lee is better). I have a friend MUA who actually is an instructor at Bennett. I can give you his info if you have questions about the school.

I heard about Lu Ross as it was listed among the best cosmetology schools in the US and also the best in southern CA. I like the fact that they focus on practical training on real clients (they have a spa) and you have the opportunity to actually have a portfolio upon graduation (they give free photoshoots).
Eva, I had a question on the foundation you used on my face for my party this weekend. I know it was NW45 Tech Foundation. Was this the powder or is it liquid? I loved the way it looked and it lasts longer then what I currently use. I want to buy some but I likedon’t know what to ask for. Also, should I get the concealer (NW45 Select Cover-up) and use that too?

The foundation was NW 45 Studio Tech. It’s more like a cream to powder foundation. I love it too!!! The only thing you need to do if you get it is to get a blot powder as well if you plan on using it during the day. The blot powder will keep your T zone from being too shiny…
Yes, you should also get the concealer! Use a lil bit under your eyes and apply it with your fourth finger by dabbing it (I believe that using your finger instead of the brush is better for concealer).

I´ve a problem… I don´t know how to apply make up and so I tend to leave without it.
I´m ghostly white… and recently had an acne problem… so I´ve got some red marks.
What colours should I wear?
I don´t know what to do… as for the lipgloss… if I use dark colors the “mustache area” sort of pops out… and I don´t have hair there.. it seems as if I had it whiter than the rest of the face
The same happens with eyeshadows… darker colors make me look way too pale…
If I use light brown colors I look like as if I had no make up at all!
I think I´m doing something wrong.

Nicole, I heard about Milan Institute of Cosmetology and Vogue College of Cosmetology. I am not sure how they programs are but I recommend that you visit both schools and ask a lot of questions. If you are more interested in makeup artistry than cosmetology, I will tend more twds Vogue as their curriculum seems to be more forcus on beauty, color artistry and their reviews are better…

Thanks for sending me your pic. I think your acne cleared up a lot as I do not see that much pimples on your face. You mostly have some rosacea-like redness on your cheeks. I recommend you use MURAD Redness Therapy at Sephora. It will clear up the redness and will get rid of the discoloration you have around your mouth. Make sure you use it daily as it is a treatment.
As far as makeup, you can pretty much wear any color on your eyes because you have brown eyes/hair. Colors like bronze, earth tones will look good for everyday makeup (try MAC woodwinked, mulch mixed with Grain). Greens will also look very good (try sumptuous olive with shroom as the highlighter). If you go to a MAC counter, ask the makeup artist to try these colors on you. For your lips, any pink lipgloss will look great on you…try them and see which one you are more comfortable with. I like Viva Glam V lipgloss with Spice lipliner on girls with your complexion.
For your powder, try to use MAC studio fix powder on your face to cover the redness whenever you go out. I think you are probably a NW20 but you should get matched at the counter as I cannot really tell from a picture.
Last but not least, try to get your eyebrows waxed (just a little bit clean up). It will accentuate your beautiful eyes…

Oui tu peux les rattraper avec un crayon a sourcil pas trop gras. Je conseille celui de MAC in spiked ou Bourjois (le marron). Tu peux aussi utiliser un fard a paupiere marron comme Espresso ou Cork. Essaie de suivre l’arche naturel de tes sourcils en leur donnant une forme un peu plus epaisse si ils sont trop fins. Ne mets pas trop de crayon au debut des sourcils (ne les rend pas rond au bout). @ Fima: I always recommend using the Spot & Pigment Lightening Gel from MURAD. It contains 2% Hydroquinone so do not over use it. You can get it from: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P4009&categoryId=C10473#moreInfo
For your foundation, use FIX+ from MAC to fix it. I do not use one but recomend it if you feel like your makeup does not stay on your face. And last but not least, avoid touching your face when you have makeup, coz there is no waterproof foundation…it will come off one way or the other.

At the moment i use MAC Full coverage NC45. i will start Fix once i have finished this one. I am scared of using lightening products, as i have heard some horror story about girls using bleach or other chemical to lighten them selfs. have you use the spot and pigment lightening gel?? what are the side affects?

The FIX + is not a foundation but a spray that will fix your powder. So you can use it along with the full coverage.
I have never used the ligthening gel on me as I do not have discoloration, but I have recommended it to some customers while working at Sephora and saw the result. It is true that Hydroquinone is a lightner and you need to be careful using it but this is really the only way to get rid of darker spots on the face. Also note that Hydroquinone is the only ingredient with FDA approval that can claim ‘skin lightening’. However, topical zinc, licorice extract, and mulberry extract also work well to even out uneven skin tone…check the link I sent you for more info.
Hi Eva! I think your website is great! I just purchased fluidline (colour: Blacktrack) by Mac and I am just having a really hard time to make my eyeliner look nice and thin especially when I am trying to wing it out. I know you recommended Brush 266 but I heard it feathers out easily and it’s quite hard since it is angled. Are there any stiff brushes out there (possibly by Mac 😛 ) that you recommened which would make my life easier????!!!

@ Jamie: Getting the eyeliner brush that will best work for you can be hard. I think it’s all about personal preferences. I personally like the 266 but I can also recommend you get the one from Sephora as it is samller and can be easier to handle…
@Mikki: Von Lee school has a program just for makeup artist. You do not need to take the whole cosmetology curriculum. Bennett cosmetology school is a good one too where you can get licensed.
@Tiff: I cannot find the number of my friend who teaches at Bennett as I just changed my cell. I have to get it from one of my former co-worker at MAC pentatgon and will give it to you as soon as I have it.

Hey Eva!! Love your site girl!! I just wanted to know if you could do a eyeshadow tutorial on a brwonskinned young lady who doesnt have a well defined eyelid crease. I am having trouble finding my crease because I have heavy/puffy lids, so my crease color gets applied in different areas all the time. I am a NW45-50 just for reference.

I have questions about applying shadows. When applying a base which base would you recommend a Cream base or Paint or does it depend on what color shadow or pigment you’re using. Also, which color Cream base or Paint would you recommend that can be used with any shadow or pigment kind of like a basic base? And here is a question that may sound weird but looking at your tutorials and you’re using more than one shadow in your crease for example Trax and Nocturnelle how exactly are they applied? Is it Trax just a little above Nocturnelle vice versa or are they both place directly in the crease and blended? I have one more question have you tried the new Minerlize powder and if so what do you think? Are the effects close to the Stylistic Mystery powder which I loved because it was lightweight, smooth and flawless but not the right tones for me? Thanks!
@ Coo: Honestly I would not advise you use any skin aging product if you are in your 20’s and your skin is healthy. The only thing it will do is create needs that are unecessary. However, I strongly advise you use skincare (Clinique or Clarins) with SPF and skin protectants especially during summer time. Worry about these wrinkles in about 10 years from now…
@ Creshenda: We need to do some damage control!!! Do not pluck these eyebrows anymore until you have a thick line. Then, try to get them trimmed with a professional. In the mean time, use MAC eyebrow pencil to draw them and with a 266 brush, take a little bit of brow set in Show-off and fill wherever you do not have enough hair.

@ MsJamie: I bought a flat Iron called BaByliss Ceramic Flat Iron and it works pretty well. My hairstylist Ayinde (btw, he is the best hairstylist in MD/DC/VA, make sure you contact him if you want a fresh hair cut @ Perez Salon Rockville ) uses one that is very good but I will need to ask him the brand. Also, the mini flat iron from Warren Tricomi does wonders too…
@ Landapanda: I use both paint and cream color base as a base for my eyemakeup. Try Architecture or Untitled for the paint and Shell or Fawtastic for the cream color base. As far as the color application in the crease, you can apply Trax above Nocturnelle and gently blend the 2 together. As far as the mineralized powder, I love them and you will like them too as they are very light and will give you a soft glow on the face…

Can’t remember how I came across your page but I’m glad I did. Actually I work for a company that makes hair removal products. I have friends that are in make up industry as well and they are just loving the Wax Strips for Eyebrows. It’s mess free, easy to use and saves you so much time compared to if you do tweezing. Another things is it’s all natural, there are no chemicals or preservatives in the product. Actually why don’t I send you a sample for you to try and let me know what you think of it.

@Landapanda: Studio Fix Fluid is slightly lighter than the Select SPF. You can barely tell the difference but yes, you should use the same number for the Select. The select looks also better on pics than the fix fluid (my personal preference…). Also, you can wear the NW43 pressed powder on top of your fluid. I prefer using the lose powder on top of the studio fix fluid…and the pressed powder on top of the Select SPF. I think it looks better…But what will even be better than both is the mineralized powder in Deep dark (you may be Dark if you are a NW 43…get matched at the counter).

Took your advise regarding my eyebrow dilemma(Over plucked)went to MAC and purchased the eyebow pencil and brow set. Eyebrows look Fabulous. Thanks again. I have another question, I am a women in my mid 40’s and when I place shadows and liners on my lid,makeup goes on fine but after awhile the shadow/liner tends to crinkle and it doesnt look flawless anymore. Do you know of anything that I could place on top lid before other than primer? Should I be looking at an eyecream?
Creshenda, I am happy that you liked the eyebrow pencil! For your makeup creasing on your eyelid, it happens to most of us and one of the reason is that your eyelid is just like any other part of your skin and needs to breath as well…the best way to keep your eyeshadow from creasing is to use a good primer. I like using MAC paint pot or paint tubes (you have to work very fast with them as they dry very quickly once on the lid0. As far as eye cream, I will strongly recommend you use one if you are in your mid-40’s. The eye area tends to wrinkle faster than any other part on your face. Try L’Oreal Dermo Expertise Age Perfect Pro-Calcium Eye Cream.

I sweat a lot, just on the face, that’s the main reason why I barely wear makeup…People say that when you use foundation, you don’t have that problem…But I don’t like foundation, I just use loose powder when I go out…Anyways, is wearing foundation the only way you can have your make up actually on all night?

Whenever I go to Senegal (West Africa…nice weather but mostly very warm with very sunny days), I use Evian mineral water spray call “Le brumisateur“ on top of my makeup to keep it fresh (available at Sephora)…It really works and gives you that hydration that the sun takes away from you…don’t forget to use a moisturizer with an SPF…Enjoy your trip!
@Fafa: Mineral Makeup!!! I meant to write a post about it long time ago but forgot…I will do it this week but what I can tell you now is that I personally think that there are good things and bad things about it (my opinion). The benefit is that it will give you a light and long lasting glow and it is made of all natural minerals from the earth; the bad thing about it is that I still have not found one line of mineral makeup that does not have powders that look ashy on dark (black) complexions…
@Coo: Whoever told you that you will not sweat if you use foundation lied to you. If you have a skin that has a natural tendency to sweat, you will sweat unless you use a moisturizer and powder specifically made for that. I usually recommend a mattifying moisturizer or gel like CLINIQUE Pore Mimimizing T-zone shine control. Use it before applying your foundation and then use MAC blot powder on top of it (the blot powder is not a pressed powder as it only has 4% pigment). It’s the perfect solution to keep your face from being too shiny. Last but not least, while I believe that wearing foundation will help your overall makeup look, I do not think that it is “mandatory”…you can go without it but I would still recomend using a lose powder if you want some type of natural finish…

So, I have been researching on baby bliss (the flat iron) you recommended and it seems to be a really good one…actually, my sister has it! who knew? lol I will just have to find a salon where I can buy it from, I am not allowed to have a credit card hehe.
I need some suggestions from you! I use Mac Studio Fix fluid Nc45 (which is a little bit orangey dark on me but thats the best foundation colour-match I can find so far)… what concealer would you suggest since I have dark circles under my eyes and I have some acne scars on my cheeks and darkness around my mouth.
Also, I was looking for a base that I could put under my eyeshadow to make the colours (especially colours like orange and chrome yellow) vibrant but a lot of the paint tube colours look really ashy or dark on me. I use paint tube (baselight) under everything but I don’t think it’s doing the job!! It just makes everything look super goldy.
Lastly, What type of scrub would you recommend for normal to combination skin that I can easily buy from shoppers drug mart or a bay store?? I do use a lot of clinique and biotherm products and I would love to try something new!!

@Ms Jamie : I hope you were able to find the flat iron. Most beauty supply stores carry it.
As far as your concealer, use MAC Studio finish concealer in NC45. Apply the Fast Response eye cream before using it under your eyes, it will reduce the dark circles. You can also use it anywhere else on your face to cover spots. Make sure you blend it with your foundation/powder.
For the eye base, I like using the cream color base in colors like Shell or Luna (light colors), it will make any bright eye shadow pop.
Last but not least, my favorite scrub for normal/combination skin is really the CLINIQUE exfoliating scrub. (click on the name to check the link to the page).However, I still have the APRICOT SCRUB from St Yves that I buy at my local pharmacy and it works great as well! Try it if you want something new and different… And feel free to ask as many questions as you want…I love it too…
@Luce: a.k.a Mme Sourcils…lol…Pour repondre a ta question, je deconseille d’utiliser la cire a la maison pour tes sourcils si tu n’es pas une professionelle. Tu risques d’enlever bcp plus de poils que tu devrais et une fois que tu commets cette faute, c’est un desastre et il faudra attendre des semaines pour voir tes sourcils repousser…le plus simple c’est d’aller te faire epiler a la cire chez une professionelle et d’acheter une pince a epiler. Tu auras juste besoin d’enlever les qqque poils qui repoussent sous ta ligne avec la pince une fois pas semaine.
Pour ta question sur BARE MINERALS, Fafa m’a pose la meme question plus haut sur les mineral makeup and I promised to write about it and will do it for sure this week. Bare Minerals est une marquee de maquillage minerale qui est tres populaire ici aux Etats Unis. Elle est bien parceque le maquillage est fait a base de mineraux qui sont tres bons pour la peau. Le seul desavantage c’est que tu n’auras pas autant de coverage que si tu utilisais un fond de teint normal et aussi, les couleurs pour les filles qui ont un teint plus fonce on tendance a ressortir un peu trop clair sur la peau (tu vois la difference apres avoir pris des photos…) mais ce probleme ne devrait pas s’appliquer pour toi vu que tu es claire…

@Fima : I will be honest with you and tell you that I have never used any tanning lotion (thanks to my already very beautiful natural dark skin 🙂 )but I know that one of the best line for tanning lotion is Clarins…I used to see customers at Nordstrom always going straight to the “CLARINS SUN” shelf every time summer was around the corner…I then learned more about their tanning line and realized that it had a quicker and more lasting effect than all the other ones…
As far as your foundation, why are you using the full coverage? I rarely recommend using it as it is way to heavy on the skin…use it only if you have very bad skin or need to take pictures for a photo shoot…so yes, I will strongly recommend you switch to the studio fix fluid…it will give you a lighter coverage with a natural finish…

Well today, I am in search of a sunscreen thats atleast has a spf 30, doesn’t leave a white cast on my skin and doesn’t give me crazy breakouts!! I have been using the prep + prime spf 50 by mac… I like it but it’s a little bit on the greasy side 😦

Hey eva!! Well my skin surprisingly burns up/tans pretty easy in the summer and I usually like to use a higher spf sunscreen so that my acne scars/discolouration doesn’t get darker. It’s weird, but lately I have been OBSESSED!! with my skin.. I am really not loving it at all.. I guess whats bothering the most is my skin discolouration around my mouth/cheeks and jawline… and the acne marks that are left on my cheeks from couple years ago. I heard hydroquinone is a good skin lightner but I am afraid to use since I heard funky things about it that darker skin tone’s hyperpigmentation can get worse and you get develop weird skin diseases. Can you suggest any products that I could buy from a bay/shoppers drug mart store (or sephora) that could make my skin even-toned, radiant and glowing? I just hate packing on foundation all the time to make my skin look “normal” 😦 You would honestly save my life and make me stop looking at the mirror 50 billion times lol
P.S: The sunscreen you recommened.. would it be okay if I used a moisturizer underneath for day time or is that too much together?

@ MsJamie: Honestly if you have discoloration, nothing else will work but hydroquinone…it’s sad but that’s the way it is…I remember answering the same question for FIMA above and here is what I told her: “I always recommend using the Spot & Pigment Lightening Gel from MURAD. It contains 2% Hydroquinone so do not over use it. You can get it from: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P4009&categoryId=C10473#moreInfo. I have never used the ligthening gel on me as I do not have discoloration, but I have recommended it to some customers while working at Sephora and saw the result. It is true that Hydroquinone is a lightner and you need to be careful using it but this is really the only way to get rid of darker spots on the face. Also note that Hydroquinone is the only ingredient with FDA approval that can claim ‘skin lightening’. However, topical zinc, licorice extract, and mulberry extract also work well to even out uneven skin tone…check the link I sent you for more info.” As far as the sunscreen I recommended, you can use it alone or with a moisturizer, it does not really matter as they both are moisturizing for the skin.
@ Fima: These little lines around the mouth can be so cute 🙂 They are actually called “dermo-creases” line and the best product on the market for that is Lancome Renergie cream . The result claims to leave your skin feeling “lifted”, firmer; smooth and supple.
If you cannot find the EVIAN brumisateur, get MAC FIX + or charging water…it will be good too.

NARS has great colors when it comes to blush and eyeshadows. I have Taj Mahal and exhibit A and love them. I also have Lovejoy, Taos and Gilda. They look great on dark complexions! I was telling hijjapprentice earlier to try to go to Lord & Taylor to get NARS products (if Sephora is too far or if they are just out of what you are looking for).

Merci d’etre une fidele lectrice de mon blog et merci d’avoir envoye ta photo! Tu vis dans quelle ville? Si il y a MAC la ou tu vis, essaie de demander a la vendeuse le fond de teint liquide SELECT TINIT SPF 15 couleur NC45. Si la couleur est trop claire, essaie le NC50. Si tu n’aimes pas les fonds de teints liquides, essaie juste une pressed powder. Ta couleur sera aussi NC 45 mais le NW43 aussi peut marcher pour la pressed powder. J’aime egalement bcp ce que MAC appele mineralized skin finish powder, essaie la couleur DARK.
L’un de ces 3 produits devrait te donner ce que tu recherches…

I love Aveeno products and started using them as sunscreen during summertime last year. The cream never gave me any allergic reaction and neither did Clinique block sheer when I used to use it. However, each person’s skin can react differently to products. So just because it worked for me does not guaranty it will work for you (especially if you broke out from another sunscreen). I would recommend you apply just a lil bit on your forearm for 3 days and see how your skin reacts…if you are still breaking out, you may just be allergic to one of the ingredients in sunscreen.

I am transitioning from Mary Kay to a high end line and I want to try MAC the only problem is trying to match foundation color without actually going to the store. I am way too busy to spare time to do a “color-dab” session and need some advice. I am a light skinned woman of color. My complexion is about the same as Beyonce maybe a little lighter with a Golden Beige hue and according to MAC I have yellow undertones since my veins look green through the skin of the underside of my forearm. I currently use MK Medium coverage foundation in Bronze 500 and the Creme to Powder in Bronze .5. The Creme to Powder is my favorite because of the full coverage which is what I want in a foundation. If you can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks!

This is my first time visiting your blog and I have to say that I Luv it! I have a couple of questions. I am lighter shade of brown close to Rihanna and Halle Berry. I use NC45. I was wanted to create a couple of looks the first being a green/brown eye with the brown shadow having a bit of a shimmer and using the same brown with a blue shadow. I wanted a look that wasn’t too dramatic, maybe something I could wear out at night with a black dress. And the second look I wanted to create was a pink/rosy look that wouldn’t look too pink on my light shade. Do you have any suggestions?
@ Rose: Thank you for your nice comment. This is really a passion for me and I love every mn I spend doing it. I do not know anybody in the UK but I have so many friends in Europe and ex collegues that I am sure I can get that info for you.
@ Fima: If you are a NW45, you should use the same color for your concealer. The best way to apply it is to use your fourth (4th) finger and dab it around your eye. @ Mizcheetahdiva: You are probably a NC45 with MAC. The studio fix powder is a 2 in 1 powder and should give you the coverage you are looking for. You can also try the studio tech which is more like a creme. If the NC45 does not work for you, try the C7. So, I recently purchased strobe cream by MAC and I am not totally sure if it looks good on me. Some mac make up artists in one MAC counter were saying it’s not right for darker skin tones because it gives a pinky purple hue on your skin (I use NC 44 Select SPF 15 foundation by the way) and my fav MAC artist in a different counter says it looks great on me. Now during the day (and sometimes nighttime too) I do use the strobe cream, then MAC prep + prime SPF 50 and then my foundation…I feel like it has the tendency to look a little white, sparkly and “plasticy” or maybe it is just me because the girl at MAC said I looked great… but I really don’t know. Also would you recommend to use the strobe cream both day and night? I definitely can’t invest in another moisturizer for night time just because I simply can’t afford it. So, please let me know if it is worth keeping or should I try something different… Thanks again for your help!! 😀 ❤

Bey Eva. Thanks so much for the post. I had question about black eyeliner. I really want to line my eyes in black liner because it looks really nice when I see it on other people mainly celebrities. However, because of my light skin color I’ve noticed that when I line my eye (top and bottom) with black eyeliner my look instantly looks dark and smokey. Since then I’ve decided that maybe I should only outline my eye when I’m going for a smoky look. But I wanted to badly to re-create to Tamara look you posted. Is this a common problem?
I loved your post with the strobe cream!! Tamara Mowry’s skin looked amazing! How do you feel about the new neo-sci collection!! I absolutely love it, I did buy some stuff from the collection but definitely need to stay away from the Mac counter for a while.
So, My only problem with the strobe cream is that, I don’t know if I should mix strobe cream with my foundation… Doesn’t that mean I need a total different moisturizer to put under my foundation or do you think strobe cream mixed in with the foundation will be enough for my normal to dry skin?? (apparently I am not combination anymore… strangely) Also, I have been putting on strobe cream at night when I go to bed (because I can’t afford two expensive moisturizers) and I was scared that I was going to break out like a crazy person but my skin actually doesn’t look too bad! I do want to find a night time *CHEAP* moisturizer that has the benefits of antioxidants + exfoliation. What would you recommend??
P.S: I went to sephora the other day, they don’t have half the products that are listed on the website 😦 which is too bad. They really need to have a sephora in london, ontario, canada for makeup/skincare junkie like me!!
P.P.S: How do you feel about NARS – Tajmahal blush on me. The sephora makeup girl said it looked “too clowny” on me, which was so disappointing because I thought it wasn’t too bad!! 😦

@Ms.Jaimie: You can mix your foundation with the strobe cream, that way it will give you a pretty glowy look. You can also keep using it at night of it works for you as it does contain green tea and vitamins. As far as your night moisturizer, try Neutrogena Light Night Cream. It shoul dnot be over $15 and is good if you have young skin that just needs to be pampered…Did you send me a pic of you using NARS blush?
@Amina: I used to work for Bobbi Brown before starting with Mac and I love the bronzers for sure!!! I like how they are matte and natural. The lipglosses are just ok…the eyecolor pigments are not as good as MAC…you will need a good eye base to make any color stand out. The shimmer bricks are must have! I like their fluidline a lot (MAC copied them on that!!!)

@ Emma: Hello Emma. Of course I do remember you!!! Coz I remember that our names were almost similar when we were younger. About your thick lips, my sister has thick lips too and I convinced her that she can use lipgloss. The key is to use a lip liner and draw a tick line around ur lips and then use a color as natural as possible on ur lips by blending the 2. Try chestnut with lipglosses like spite, bare truth, chai (MAC)
@ Elody: Most foundation/ powder have a suncreen, even when it’s not written on the box. I would suggest you try a mineral foundation like bare minerals. You should not have any problem with that.
@ Itsana: You can become a makeup artist at any age. It s not about how old you are but about your skills! If you are pretty good you already ARE a makeup artist. However in order for you to work or have a license, you will need to wait until you are 16 at least…

I did finally go to MAC and the makeup artist matched me as a NC55 but it made my skin look so sallow as if I was dead 😦 so I took it back hmmmm so I am back using my Sue Divett Kimberly Plateau. Like most women of color, I get lighter in the winter thinking about looking at Make up Forever HD foundation. I am in school in Buffalo, NY thinking about crossing the border to Canada. @ LJ: Hi LJ, I am sorry but I am not familiar with that area. I would suggest you google schools located in that area, visit each of them, look at their curriculum and ask questions…Good luck!
@ Kesh: If you want a natural brown look and you are a NW45, I would suggest you get these 4 colors:
– soft brown or Bamboo (for the lid)
– Mulch or Bronze (for the crease)
– Espresso or Brun (for the outer corner crease, can also be used as an eyeliner or to fill eyebrows–> espresso only)
– Arena (this is the best color to use as a highlighter if you are a NW45 or darker, you can use it under your eyebrows to highlight any color eyeshadow)

@ Nicolette: I am sorry you could not get matched correctly at MAC. NC 55 is a color that can look very dull as it contains too many yellow pigments and is not light enough…I am happy you could find another brand…try IMAN also…
In what area of Canada will you be? I was in MTL and visited a few MAC counters and was not really impressed with the knowledge of the artist when it comes to WOC…I think it’s a lil bit better in Toronto…let me know how you like it…

J’aurais deux questions s’il te plait:
1) Penses-tu que le touche éclat d’Yves Saint Laurent numéro 4 conviendrait à une peau noire comme moi cad NW45?
2) A part MAC, connais-tu des bonnes références de fond de teint, j’ai acheté dernièrement studio tech de mac en nw45 et non seulement il est trop rouge/rose sur ma peau mais en plus la texture ne rend vraiment pas bien et ça me fait une peau plus moche que sans… De plus je pense que même en essayant un NC (qui serait sans doute au contraire trop jaune), le vrai problème du studio tech est la texture (en plus pas suffisant couvrante pour moi).

@ Aida: Sorry for the delay…I like Bobbi Brown makeup but I am not a big fan of their foundation. The only one that I think works and is good is the stick foundation. It’s easy to blend on the face and gives you a buildable coverage. I prefer MAC foundation for WOC. Try Black Opal too. As far as Vincent Longo, it’s a good makeup brand but I don’t find them very versatile in the choice of color, especially for women of color. However, they do have great eye shadows palettes (come in trio or duo also).
@ Ms.Kay: I know this is coming late but check my old post on eyebrows: HERE and the video on eyebrows tutorial. Try to get them waxed every 2 weeks with a professional.

@Marix: Je ne suis pas sure si la touché éclat numéro 4 t’irait car il faudrait vraiment que je vois ta peau et que je puisse te dire (même si tu utilises NW45 et que ca te va). Il y a un peu de rouge dedans et donc si le NW45 de Mac te va ca devrait être plus ou moins correcte. Essaie de faire l’essai et regarde sous la lumière du jour ce que ca donne. A part MAC, je conseille aussi Black Opal et Black-Up. Les fonds de teints de IMAN sont bien aussi. Le studio tech est assez lourd pour une peau grasse…et c’est pour ca que ce n’est pas mon 1 er choix chez MAC. Essai le liquide Select SPF, le studio fix ou le mineralize powder. Envoi moi une photo sur mon e-mail pour que je puisse voir si tu es plus une NW (ROUGE) ou NC (Jaune).

@ Latoya: MAC makeup artists are great and they can usually recommend the right colors for you. Most of the time, if you are a NC45 in one type of powder or foundation, it will be the same number in the whole line. However, I strongly recomend you stop by a counter just to be sure. You can also try MAC select SPF 15 liquid as a liquid foundation. It’s not too heavy on the skin and gives a very natural finish.
@ Marian: I like Lancome Bi-facil eye makeup remover. I hope we’ll get to see each other before you leave Dakar…I know my schedule is soo busy but hopefully we can do something…
@ Ina: Abdijan c doux!!! Moi aussi j’ai pris enormement de poids quand j’y etais…le meilleur produit pour les boutons qui sortent de nul part c’est “boo boo zap” de Benefit. Je ne pense pas que tu pourras le trouver si tu es toujours a Abidjan. Ce que tu pourrais faire en attendant c un gommage hydratant et applique un peu de beurre de karite sur les boutons le soir au coucher. Pour les poils a ton menton, je pense que la meilleure solution c’est l’epilation a la cire ou a la pince comme tu le fais deja…
@ Dalia: Try MURAD Age Spot & Pigment lightening gel. It has 2 % hydroquinone so you know…
Available at Sephora for $58. It’s pricy but it works for dark spot on the face.
@ Faive: The best thing if you really are new at makeup is to find some time to go behind a counter and have the makeup artist show you a few things. For your eyebrows, get them waxed by a professional and go for touch ups every 2 weeks. For your dark circles use MAC FAST RESPONSE eye cream. It has caffeine extracts and is great for dark cirlces.

I bought MAC’s Studio Tech Cream Foundation (NC45) and MAC’s Select Sheer/Pressed Powder NC55. Mac sure is expensive, that much cost me 5o bucks, then the lady at the counter said I need a 32 dollar foundation brush. I was like NO way! My question is the following: I am neither too dark nor too light but my famce has the tendency to be darker then the rest of my body. Do you have any recommendations for that? I don’t use specific products; I wash my face with “Mon Savon” and that’s it and use Topicreme as body and face lotion. I only put make up on for occasions. I want a nice and clear skin but not sure what to use for my face.
My last question: I heard that make up everyday will get you old fast, is this a myth or reality? Because of this I don’t even dare wear free powder on my face.
From reading your blog, you seem to favor Mac for black skin; is this correct or what make up brand do you most prefer for black skin? Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.

J’ai une question pour toi. Je me suis enfin décidée pour un maquillage permanent (tatouage) des sourcils cependant il y a des éléments pour lesquels j’avais pas tout compris dans le post que tu avais fait sur le sujet:
– est ce qu’on t’enlève tous les sourcils pour dessiner à la place une nouvelle ligne ou alors est ce que c’est uniquement un remplissage des “trous”
– au niveau de la douleur: est ce que tu es sous anesthésie locale? Au bout de combien de temps est ce que cette douleur disparait-elle? Et ces fameuses crôutes dont tout le monde parle: est ce que c’est le genre t’es défigurée pendant 4 jours au point de ne plus pouvoir sortir de chez toi?
En tous cas merci d’avance pour tes réponses. J’ai trouvé une clinique sur internet qui m’a l’air pas mal donc j’aimerais bien avoir des éclaircissements avant d’aller faire un tour..

Love your site. I need a little ( well a lot ) help. It seems when I get my make up done I think none of the foundation works for me. I tend to look almost manly by the time they are finished. The last time I got my make up done I went to MAC and it looked horrible. To top it off I took pictures that day. I really need help picking out foundation, concealer etc. When I apply it, it looks cakey and my pores are visable. Can I send you a picture of myself so that you can suggest some ideas? Salut Eva, j’ai une peau avec de l’acné de temps en temps (surtout quand je mange du choclat et consor. Sais tu quel genre de fond de teint je peux mettre en journée. Est ce qu’un fond de teint poudre est suffisant ou je dois utiliser le liquide? Pour le moment j’utilise le mac studio fix.
Et aussi derniere question: en soirée, je trouve qu’il ne tient pas trop, surtout en boite, ou il fait trop chaud generalement.

My question is I am looking for cream or lotion,some kind of regime that will clear the spots from my face but won’t bleach my dark skin . I have so many spots that I got when I was pregnant and even before that due to acne. Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acid seem to make it worse.Thanks in advance for your reply.

I need your advice. I have been wearing Select SPF15 Foundation in NW43 and it has been the perfect match for me. After trying to find the perfect match for years I finally got it right and now Mac as taken it out of stock. Can you imagine how I felt when I was told this. I mean what if I was planning to get married. What? No foundation! My fiance would be mad at me because I would have to call the wedding off. LOL I have contacted the Gone but not forgotten program and they have yet to find this product. So I would like to ask you this, do you know of what other Mac product whether it’s the studio sculpt that would be even close to the color and wear of the Select SPF15 Foundation in NW43. Now just to let you know my skin type i am a mixture of yellow, neutral and warm undertones. This is mostly because i do suffer from acne and the after affects of acne scarring which then gives me the darker forehead and dark spots everywhere else. My neck is very yellow “NC”. I have tried the Studio Fix Fluid NW 43 and it’s ok it’s just a litte darker and heavier than I would like it to be. Most Mac reps would go straight for NC45 or NC50 after just looking at me but than once they apply the foundation they say no, I think your more NW something. I’m sure it’s not easy matching someone with out actually seeing them and applying foundations but I was hoping to get some direction as to which product do I start trying first that may be close to Select SPF15 Foundation. And I feel from visiting your blog you have extensive knowledge of MAC products. I appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!!!

Just wanna say that I love your site and I will be telling all of my friends about it.
My question is I’m always reading that I should wear two different shades of foundation. I understand why (because people are generally not all one colour and it makes for a more ‘realistic’ looking skin tone, I get that), but I have no idea how to apply two different shades and where I should be putting the darker shade/which parts of my face?
I always apply foundation with my fingers and then blend using pads to get it into any little nooks I may have missed and to smooth it out, I wear Mac studio fix NW50.

The only one I do over and over though is the dark brown/chestnut with an taupe, light brown or goldish lipgloss. I am a medium complected African-American woman. My skin tone is Caramel. My outer tone is like a reddish brown and my undertones are very gold. NC 5O is darkens me. I took a photo with NC 50 and my face was the color of red clay, and my body was caramel. NC45 is better but it is ashy looking in the darker areas of my face. I decided to switch to Lancome foundation. I can wear Lancome and it matches my undertones and overtones. MAC has some awesome makeup, but their foundations are not ideal for women with medium tones. Also, the sales people at the MAC counter can be bit too opinionated, although you tell them what works for you.

I love makeup artistry and am trying to become one currently. I’m finishing up my bachelors in psychology right now and look forward to switching to makeup, something I truly love, right after graduation. I’m working hard to save my money right now to afford some time of makeup program. I am in the Boston area and have considered David Nichols International and the Debra Macki workshops. If you have any advice for me regarding good programs, I’m already frequently expanding my makeup arsenal, watching so many tutorials, practicing on friends and such, am a regular at the MAC counter so much so that the girls there know me and let me hang out for as long as I want, etc. but I do need some professional instruction. I am trying to find a good makeup artist to sort of apprentice under, for free, I’ll even wash their brushes for them.
I would love to work on movie sets and travel abroad with this skill, joining two of my passions. If you have any advice whatsoever it it more than welcome. I’m just trying to choose the best possible program that will prepare me.

Hi Eva, i’m a nigerian girl with very oily skin. Recently i had this outbreak of pimples which kept re-occurring and left spots on my face.I use Mary Kay concealer(Bronze1), foundation(Bronze 507)and Black opal powder(color:02 light), yet using all this still doesn’t hide my spots. This has been causing a lot of concern to me a i don’t know what else to do having tried a lot of things to no avail. Please i’m in desperate need of help.
NOTE: Remember this is Nigeria and we don’t have access to a lot of things i.e Make-UP you have over there.

I live in the Everett/Seattle Washington area and have been searching and searching for a good makeup school in my area, but have yet to find one. I have zero interest in hair or wigs, just all facets of the makeup industry…Actually, I’m considering moving to California to go to makeup artist school if I cannot find one in my area. I need to find one that is accredited and has finanacial aid and/or student loans. I’m willing to move, but prefer to stay in Washington if possible. I have heard there is school in Canada, but I plan to live in the states so not sure if that would work and if I had to choose between Canada and California, I’d have to go with the latter. 😉

I have eyes much like Diana Ross. I have never been great with eyeshadows yet as I get older, I need more to make them pop. I wear mascara and liner but not much else regarding the eyes. My foundations are that of Studio Fix NW 45 or Rich Cocoa Estee Lauder. Also, the M.A.C. artist gave me a gold milneral finish which does nothing for my skin.
My question is how do I even start with eyeshadow. What is the best brands other than M.A.C. and what is your daily skin regimine?

What is your skin type? There are a lot of good skincare brands out there that you can check. I don’t know how bad is your break out, but I would suggest proactiv if you have acne. I have seen it work on people.
Other good skincare brands that I like are CLINIQUE, CLARINS and LA PRAIRIE (pretty expensive and it is more for mature skin and anti-aging). Check out http://leboudoirdejustine.com/ she has good advice for clarins (if you speak french).

I came across you blog today for the first time and I’m loving it. Great job! I love makeup and want to learn enough so I can be comfortable in applying makeup on others. I understand the need to practice a lot, but I want to learn from reading, watching others, then practice as much as possible. I’m specifically interested in sanitation, skin analysis, color analysis, makeup application, etc. I am seriously thinking about taking the 5 weeks Makeup Artistry course at Bennett Career Institute in DC. Someone suggested I take lessons from the Makeup Artists at the MAC store in Petagon City, VA instead. Do you have any comments about Bennett?
